The sound that signalled death for IRA ‘informers’

In the troubled times of the Northern Ireland conflict, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) used a chilling method to deal with suspected informers within their ranks. This method involved a particular sound that signalled the death sentence for those suspected of betraying the IRA.

Members of the IRA would gather in a room with the suspected informer and suddenly, a ringing sound would fill the room. This sound was produced by a makeshift device, often made from a metal drum and a stick. The sound was deafening and would instill fear in the person accused of being an informer.

Once the sound started, the accused informer would be interrogated and pressured to confess their alleged betrayal. If they did not confess, the sound would continue to ring until they broke. In many cases, this method led to the execution of those deemed to be informers.

This sinister sound became synonymous with the IRA’s ruthless tactics and the fear they instilled in their own members. It served as a warning to others within the organization to remain loyal and obedient, or face the same fate.
